Happy Father's Day!

Drawing by Ennio for the #1 Dad!
We celebrated Father's Day by doing something very special in these strange times: going out and about in nature... which is one of the things Marcus really enjoys doing. The morning started off by having a nice breakfast at home and the kids handing over to daddy cards and hugs 😀. We took our time to get ready and then headed out (something rare these days!) to the Los Angeles County Arboretum. I had made on-line reservations the day before. The park was not crowded at all since they only let in a limited number of people. We enjoyed walking the grounds,  chilling by the waterfalls and taking pictures. At night, we had dinner on the outside patio of the Cheesecake Factory. Tableside service was minimal. We had to scan a QR-code to see the menu and then order online. Our food was brought to the table but that was about it for waiter/table contact. It felt safe and we enjoyed eating out immensely. I would love to do it again on each and every special occasion!

The Arboretum is famous for its free roaming peacocks!

A bittersweet last day of school...

June 12, 2020 or the last day of school of the 2019-2020 school year. Lily sighed that it wasn't exactly how she had imagined her last day of Elementary School to be (she will start Middle School next year) and she did feel quite sad about it. Ennio on the other hand couldn't be happier: finally summer break! He had a Zoom meeting in the morning with his 3rd grade classroom and showed off his self-made graduation cap (it was one of his assigned art projects of that week). He also had to deliver a "graduation" speech, which he had prepared in advance (it was another class assignment): "Hello Room 13, my name is ENNIO and I would love to thank you for being my classmates and playing. I love doing field trips to the Aquarium and the Leonis Adobe Chumash Village. My favorite part of the Aquarium was touching the jelly fishes. My favorite part of the Leonis Adobe Chumash Village is going in the tents. I love catching snowflakes aktivity because you can throw snowflakes around and other people can catch them. I like having speech setions. They are fun and the teachers are nice. Thank you all and my teacher, Ms. Mittermiller. Have a good summer break!"

Lily was actually able to say goodbye to her teacher and some of her classmates in-person. One of the parents had organized a "farewell" get-together in front of their house. Everyone was required to wear facemasks and keep 6 feet distance, but it was something she happily did just to be able to see her friends and teacher. It only lasted about half an hour but it really uplifted her spirits. I think Lily is the one who suffers the most in our family from this new reality.

The kids have a couple of weeks off now, but on June 24, they will start on-line summer school for 3 weeks. We don't have all the details yet on how this will be organized by LAUSD. It looks like it will be 2 hours of virtual teaching in the morning (math and ELA) and 1 hour of enrichment in the afternoon. I will give an update as soon as we learn more!

Keeping busy...

Ennio is happy playing video games (Disneyland Adventures) while Lily is craving social contact and prefers to go on social distancing walks with us. We met up with her friends Emmet and Pearl and celebrated Pearl's birthday in her backyard (first time we entered another house since the lockdown).

Another art project...
... before moving on to video games!
