This past week, besides work, I' ve been very busy preparing my boyfriend's tax return (yes, his tax return!!!) Since he's an independent contractor, it's very important to write off as many expenses as possible, so I went through all the receipts and invoices and tried to come up with as much as I could. We had an appointment with our tax consultant on Wednesday and he was so impressed with my work, he said, it was so much less work for him, he was going to charge us less and Marcus should definitely invite me to dinner! Of course, I couldn't be happier. I got to pick the restaurant and opted for Octopus, one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the neighborhood.
Before I came to California, I had never had sushi. The idea of eating raw fish somehow was not very appealing to me. But boy, what a good thing I didn't mind trying. Sushi has been one of the best food experiences in my life! Maybe it's due to the fact that a lot of Japanese immigrants are living here, so the food is very authentic... but I have to say: I absolutely LOVE it, love it, love it. I don't know if sushi has made it to restaurants across the Atlantic. I would be very curious to find out... (let me know what you think about it!) It would definitely be one of the things I'd miss the most if I had to move back to Belgium. To give you an idea of what you, Belgians and other Europeans, are missing out on, here's a picture (above).
When we have guests over, I always take them out to a local Japanese restaurant where they have to try sushi. So, my parents - who will be visiting soon - will be my next victims ;-)Last fall, Eva, Marcus' mom, came to visit us and on the photo, she demonstrates how to properly eat sushi! Way to go, Eva!
So, that's my short review of the past week: work, taxes and sushi.
Glad I have the weekend ahead of me: time to clean up the apartment, make some space for my parents, but also: go to the LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Arts). I have never been to this museum, and this weekend, the museum is celebrating its 40th birthday. Admission is free all weekend long and there's an exhibition I really want to see: "Miro to Warhol: Gifts from Robert H. Halff" . I will try to kidnap Marcus under the pretext that it is never bad to work on your cultural knowledge. Who knows, it might even be a source of inspiration??? Wish me luck!
Have a good weekend, all of you!
Groetjes, Ilse
Update on 02.04.06:
