Ennio!!!

Looking good on March 25! (Photo taken by his teacher)

Painted faces

Today, we went to the birthday party of Chloe (pictured on the left), one of Lily's Kindergarten classmates. The party was at a playground, 10 minutes from where we live. So convenient! We played from 2 till 7! The theme was "Monster High", a kids TV show inspired by monster movies, sci-fi horror, and thriller fiction. I don't know why, but Lily loves it, and she's not the only one, I could tell!  There was a face-painter and a lot of girls wanted to be "Draculaura". The boys preferred to be superheroes (Batman, Spiderman,...). Ennio got his face painted for the very first time and he was "half Ennio/half Spiderman" (as Lily put it!)

Oh, the places you'll go!

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! (1990) is a book written and illustrated by children’s author Dr. Seuss. It was the last of his books to be published in his lifetime and has proved one of his most popular. It is often read in school classrooms. Here's an excerpt.

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to great places!
You're off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.
(...)
It's opener there
in the wide open air.

Out there things can happen
and frequently do
to people as brainy
and footsy as you.

OH!
THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!

You'll be on y our way up!
You'll be seeing great sights!
You'll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights.

Wherever you fly, you'll be best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Except when you don't.
Because, sometimes, you won't.

I'm sorry to say so
but, sadly, it's true
that bang-ups
and hang-ups
can happen to you.
(...)
You can get so confused
that you'll start in to race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles cross weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The waiting place...
...for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or the waiting around for a Yes or No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.
(...)
NO!
That's not for you!

Somehow you'll escape
all that waiting and staying
You'll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

With banner flip-flapping,
once more you'll ride high!
Ready for anything under the sky.
Ready because you're that kind of a guy!

Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. There are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You'll be as famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.

Except when they don't
Because, sometimes they won't.

I'm afraid that some times
you'll play lonely games too.
Games you can't win
'cause you'll play against you.

All Alone!
Whether you like it or not,
Alone will be something
you'll be quite a lot.
(...)
You'll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You'll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life's
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never foget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So...
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
You're off the great places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!

Dentist check-up

Hij kreeg 80% ("good"). Binnen 6 maanden staan we hier opnieuw!

Mmmm! Maar daarna wel flink poetsen!!!

Back to work!

Opa is vertrokken, and we're back to business.
Time to wake up & get ready for another day!

Happy St Paddy's Day!

How I love love love Ennio's preschool! It's such a different experience than the school where he started last year and would cry non-stop! Sure, we still have have a lot of hurdles to overcome, but the teachers are working with us and they truly love and care about Ennio! They also make the cutest artwork with the children :-)

Gerhard's photos!

Opa took some fun photos of "everyday life" at our house. You'll see that I have given up on keeping the living room clutter-free... Toys everywhere, and especially on the floor :-)

This is a typical morning sight at our house: Ennio and Lily wake up, go downstairs, sit on the vent of the heater and wait for the hot air to blow out and heat their butts!

Goodbye Opa!

Bye bye, Opa Jumbo (Ennio's words), until hopefully soon!

Homework with Opa!

Lily got her March Family Homework Project and I am sooooo happy that Gerhard is here to help us out!!! March is all about Saint Patrick's Day, the Irish holiday that celebrates the saint on March 17. The project she needs to make is... to design a "Leprechaun Trap". A leprechaun (geen idee hoe je dit vertaalt in het Nederlands) is a type of fairy in Irish folklore, usually taking the form of an old man, clad in a red or green coat, who enjoys partaking in mischief. The leprechauns spend all their time busily making shoes, and store away all their coins in a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If ever captured by a human, the leprechaun has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for their release. Popular depiction shows the leprechaun as being no taller than a small child, with a beard and hat. (From Wikipedia)

Lily's teacher explained in a note with the homework assignment that "the trap should not be much larger than a shoebox and needs to have at least one moving part to trap the leprechaun. Keep in mind how you will attract the leprechaun to your trap as well as how you will entice him to go in your trap! Be clever, smart and tricky! Build the trap using nails, glue, or string to make your trap 'leprechaun tight'! Don't make it too big - remember you're catching a tiny leprechaun, not a giant! Be ready to explain how your trap works. You will use your trap to demonstrate. We will set them Monday, March 16, before we leave and see what we find Tuesday morning, on Saint Patrick's Day! ***Hint: Leprechauns are tricky fellows! They like shiny things, things that glitter. They are often naughty and disobey signs!***"

Oh my, I am certainly not the craftiest of persons, so I was extremely happy to be able to ask Opa to take upon him some "grandfatherly" duties and design the trap with Lily. He immediately got excited and started drawing a blueprint. All I needed to do was provide some supplies (shoebox, glue, cardboard paper, colored markers, paper cups, pencils and strings, etc, all of which we had in the house) and Lily and Gerhard got to work. They were so motivated that they finished their project in 2 nights (and it's only due in 2 weeks). Waw, I can't even remember ever having done my homework so timely! Thank you, Opa!

The finished trap: a ladder and a big sign "DO NOT GO HERE" (which the leprechaun will surely disobey), a golden coin in a cup to make him step into it and hopla, the leprechaun will be caught in the box! Good job, Lily, I think you will be able to make 3 happy wishes :-)

Natural History Museum

Scary dinosaur! Grrr!
